Here are a couple of the more interesting emails we’ve received in the past 24 hours….
Editors -
Well written post today about your supposed aversion to controversy. You need to be careful about slotting all those of us concerned about Yellowstone into the ranks of the ranting and raving lunatics that you read on so many blogs these days. I sit on the Federal Bench in California, am an avid fly fisherman, fish YNP at least twice a year, and am what I’m sure you’d probably call a liberal (I call myself a progressive).
Simply put - I don’t rant and rave and call people names on blogs, but am sure tempted to sometimes (such as Montana’s continual stream of idiotic governors). I’m a staunch supporter of the coalitions that you mentioned (Henry’s Fork Foundation is a great example) and share your hope that those who have a vested interested in river management will come together and find solutions that work - period.
Finally - somewhat strange coming from a “progressive” judge - I agree further that the tactic of environmental legal cases that intend simply to obstruct is a tired one that is loosing ground in the eyes of the general populace, however misinformed about the issues the populace might be. While it might be considered a quixotic quest, your call to have groups come together to work out issues is the right approach for the bulk of these disputes. I have suggested mediation to many a party in these cases over the years; in my (I suppose) limited experience it is overwhelmingly the disputing plaintiff that typically rejects the suggestion. Though I strongly dislike your attempt to characterize many of these groups as preferring or intending disruption over solution, you may indeed be correct.
Overall a pretty thoughful post for a rube (I presume you’re a reformed attorney) from Montana, and I’d suggest you write more posts like this one instead of about electric scooters.

BTW DP, none of us on the team are attorneys, but we have one in the family - another proof that you simply can’t choose your relatives. And to the anonymous genius whose email is posted - say what you will, but leave our dog out of it…
