As we’ve noted before, we’ve been Sage fans for almost twenty years now - the first rod I built was a Sage nine foot 6 weight, and fished it for years until a buddy was dinking around and lost it out the back of my drift boat on the Snake in Jackson Hole one summer.

I’d been hunting for an reasonably priced 9 weight for the salt and for steelhead, and tried a buddy’s Sage VT2 990-4 two summer’s ago.  The rod was responsive, crisp, fast, and loaded very well, handling big poppers on the windy South Texas Laguna Madre with ease.

This isn’t the fanciest rod in the world with it’s uplocking anodized aluminum reelseat, but it’s very well built with typical Sage craftmanship.   And while it’s a beautiful rod, it’s not meant to be a work of art - this is a hard working salt water demon.  I’ve never looked back after building out one of these, and would do it again in a heartbeat.

If you’re looking for a great, reasonably priced 9 weight to get started in the salt with, look no further…..
