Like you, we’ve seen fly boxes come and go over the years. Our typical reaction to a new fly box design is simply to yawn….though we had a different reaction to one this past year.
Since changing over to Scientific Anglers System X Waterproof Fly Boxes this past season, we’ve been impressed with several of its features. First of all, as the name suggests, these babies really are waterproof, a tapered seal and soft rubber gasket assure a watertight closure around the entire perimeter.
Secondly, these boxes really do float very well - we’ve snagged our own dropped boxes easily on the Madison and Yellowstone this year. We even caught an unattended box drifting high and dry on the Missouri this fall with no one in sight (nice BWO box with dries on one side and nymphs / soft hackles on the other - let us know if you lost it). Thirdly, these are probably the easiest box to see into without opening I’ve ever seen, even with my aging, bifocal aided eyes.
Finally, there are several different inserts that are easily exchanged to allow you to customize the box contents to fit the hatch of the day. SA even offers easily interchangable inserts that fit your different types of flies, and an “Insert Suitcase” to hold and transport the different box inserts.
Pretty nifty - if it’s time to replace or add another box - this concept deserves a look.
