Two Yellowstone Fires have been announced as controlled today, and a new was started by lightning.

The new fire is the Thistle Fire, started by lightning at about 2:30 this afternoon in the backcountry east of the Yellowstone River and 7 miles north/northeast of Fishing Bridge.  Four smokejumpers were flown in to conduct the initial attack.

The Huckleberry Fire 10 mile east of the South Entrance has been declared 100% contained and the smokejumpers hiked out today.

The Owl Fire, the 2,800 acre fire in the northwest corner of the Park in the Specimen Creek drainage east of 191 is being contained by a team of 12 smokejumpers, a 20 man crew, and 5 man YNP trails crew.  The new burn (8 acres) is deemed to be contained.

The Columbine Fire contines to grow in the area east/northeast of Yellowstone Lake and south of the East Entrance Road.  Fire size estimates are now in the 17,000 acre range.  Click here for a link to the Inciweb.org page for the Columbine Fire.

Don’t let the fires change your upcoming near future fishing plans or your plans for your fall trip - the Park will still fish this fall.
