The Madison River in the Park continues its fairly typical August behavior, and in fact in our opinion given flows and water temps, you still shouldn’t be fishing the Madison in the Park at all at this point. This section of the river will likely be fishable again within the first two weeks of September, pending weather and water.
There has been a glimpse of hope this week as night time temperatures have clearly cooled a bit - it’s not fall yet, but you can see it on the horizon. Amen.
Officially, the Madison River in the Park remains under special regulations right now - basically the entire river in the Park is closed from 2 PM to 5 AM, and unbelievably continues to draw attention from casual anglers during the mornings.
We will start posted flows for you again as we start to watch to Park section of the Madison more closely. Flows today near West Yellowstone are 342 cfs at 0515, with the average for today 427 cfs, and the 20% marker 352 cfs. She’s obviously still running quite low.
The Upper Madison river in Montana below the lakes continues to fish pretty darn well - check our Madision River Reports (divided into Upper Madison and Lower Madison) at Best Fly Fishing Montana.com.(this link will take you right to the report blog). The Upper Madison report was updated yesterday.
