Ran back up the Gallatin this afternoon just to enjoy the superb early spring day - it’s 49 this afternoon in Bozeman, and was a balmy 40 on the river at the Deer Creek Trailhead bridge. Working the pool / deep run upstream of the bridge today with an olive HE and Prince dropper beneath an indicator - this big boy hooked up and made a great show before sliding into the shallows. This is the nicest fish I’ve brought to hand on the Gallatin in some time. He’s back growing a little more for next time.
There were quite a few folks out, and we noted guides out with clients on the river for the first time in quite a while. Talking to buddies who’ve been on the water, almost any well presented nymph will produce, and we’ve been having great success with standard fare - BH Prince today, SJ worms, BH Hares Ears, and even some big, ugly, generic type stonefly nymphs.
Here’s to the upcoming spring season - near 50 in town tomorrow will push more of the snow off the lower Gallatin, and we’d expect the Lower Madison and Yellowstone as well.
