After seemingly several long weeks of high and stained flows, the Madison in the Park is fishing reasonably well in the late evenings, and the river is looking more like its standard July self, though at high average flows.
The PMD spinner falls are definitely easing up after an amazing run the past few weeks. We agree that the Madison is fishing much better out of the Park right now, and if we were making the trip to the Park today, we’d probably wait and fish the Caddis hatch for an hour either side of dusk. Patience, fine tippets, and crystal clean approaches are already called for this early in the season.
If there isn’t hatch activity present, you could throw streamers or double nymph rigs (deep in the slots), but we’d head for more active water this time of year, and come back for the Caddis in the evening. The pick above was taken about dusk this past Monday.
Flow this morning (0515) was 503 cfs, with today’s average 470 cfs.
