Even with flows that are above average for this day (flows today near the confluence at 0700 are 289 cfs, with today’s historical average 276 cfs), the river has been reaching dangerously high temps during these warm summer afternoons, and we’re today joining the increasing chorus of voices suggesting you fish other waters until around mid-September. It’s only six weeks or so from now! Water temps were pushing 79 degrees at the confuence several days this week.
Folks have still been moving some fish with Damsels, and the evening Caddis are still around. If you simply must fish the Firehole, please wait until late evening or head to the very highest ranges of the river above Old Faithful - there are some fun brookies up there. There are other waters fishing quite well right now in the Park and the larger neighborhood. In our humble opinion the NPS should impose restrictions on this venerable fishery now.

In keeping with the above, we’ll be back in September with fly recommendations.
