I must admit I’m suprised and a bit dismayed by now our 9th or 10th email in the past few days that has gone something like this - they have all come from frustrated fathers whose young kids (mostly in the 3 to 6 year old range) have been “taught” at school or preschool that fishing is a bad thing to do (for a variety of reasons - you’ve heard them no doubt).
These dads have been asking about books to read with their kids that reflect some of the positive aspects of fishing.
Gone Fishing is one of my family’s favorites - we read it hundreds of times to our two children when they were younger.
It is the story of a young boy who mimics the rituals of his beloved father as they plan to go on a fishing trip, eat their fishing day breakfast, and finally arrive on the water to fish. Delightfully illustrated, the well written story pulls your child into the action, and the story is sequentially sensible and accurate.
The son (my but it does start when they’re young) outfishes the father - and comes home happy after a delightful day.
Most appropriate for ages 3-7, this is one that you and your children will treasure for years. My kids are 18 and 19 and still can recite most of this book from memory, and yes, it’s still in our family library. Yes, my kids were in the dory very young, both took their first floats before their second birthday (we had a high sided drift boat and good life jackets).
We’ll dig around and see if we can’t find some others would fit the bill too. You can’t let the antifishing wackos have an inch on this.
If you’re one of those dads, or know one, here’s a link to pick the book up quick, easy, and cheap from Amazon / Borders…….
