There were a couple of interesting side notes from my workday yesterday at the shop -
Two groups of wildland firefighters came in, on their way up to the Cascade Wildland Fire, 6 miles west of Red Lodge. The fire, as reported by InciWeb at 0500 this morning, is at 5,936 acres and 5% containment. Almost 500 personnel are on the ground there, and more are expected to come. The firefighters I talked to said they expect this one to be a bear – it has been crowning, with short runs and short range spotting. With the high winds the area expects today, they were gearing up for a long, arduous go in the trenches. Keep up the good work guys, we appreciate you.
In another meeting of note, a game warden was in and I asked him about bears this year. We keep seeing more and more and it seems they are more active this year. He said there is a bear near Hebgen they are keeping an eye on and expect to capture and relocate here in the next few days. So, if you are planning on tent camping near Hebgen, be sure to store your food away from your tents, and do not cook in your campsite, or you may have a less-than-welcome visitor. From our discussion it’s clear there have been a lot more bear incidents this year than have made the news.
