The Gibbon River has been fishing surprisingly well this summer.  Since the end of June, fishing has been active with ants, beetles, hoppers, and attractors.  Caddis in the evening have been fun and pleasant fishing.  The pocket stretches have fish more than willing to rise to attractors in particular.

The upper meadows are best fished in the evenings, and though the big boys are tough to hook up with even in the waning light, they will provide hours of opportunities and entertainment.  Go just before dark for the best chance to see these monsters come to the surface and taunt you.  If going after the big boys discourages you, head over to Virginia Meadows and restore your optimism.  There are plenty of little brookies in the river there, but be sure to bring little flies, as anything larger than a #18 will be hard for them to chomp on.

If you are after daytime action on the Gibbon, head over to the area around Beryl Springs, the Gibbon Picnic Grounds, and Tuft Cliffs upstream from the falls.  Tie on a ant or beetle, PMD or Yellow Sallie, and get to fishing!  Morning fishing has been surprisingly nice below Norris Geyser Basin.  Go with a mid-size attractor/nymph dropper and; above the Basin, use small attractors.

The Gibbon is fishing much later than in the past few seasons; take advantage of it and get out there!  Today’s pic is a look at the very nice Virginia Cascades on the upper Gibbon.

Flows today (0600) are 120 cfs, with today’s average 94 cfs on the gage at Madison Junction.
