The Lamar River has been fishing beautifully of late.  Always one of the last of the northeast corner streams to clear completely post-run off, the Lamar is definitely worth your time once the water comes down and clears.  And boy, is she clear.  When we were in the park two days ago, the Lamar was crystal-clear and looking ready to fish as you can see from the picture above.

A few caddis have been coming off in the mornings and evenings.  Look for more and more PMDs to come off – rumor has it they are really starting to make their appearance.  Green Drake Spinners and PMD Cripples should also be in your fly box.  Some anglers are having marvelous luck with Trudes and Attractors as well.  Getting a good drift on the Lamar is more important than having the perfect pattern right now – even though these fish have not seen a lot of action yet this year, they can still be picky.  If you have a refusal, consider changing flies and trying again.  Larger Parawulffs and Stimulators are great for locating fish and seeing where the big boys are looking. It’s even possible to see some baetis on the river this time of year.

Some of the best fishing on the Lamar is a good piece off the road – but be sure not to overlook this bountiful stream.  Be sure to bring plenty of bug spray (the bugs have been at full attack levels) and have your bear spray readily accessible.  Come well prepared, and prepare to enjoy fishing the Lamar!

Flows today (0600) are 534 cfs, with today’s average 368 cfs at the gage near Tower Ranger Station.
