The Bechler River’s status hasn’t changed a lot since last week - and with the warm temps on tap for the next few days fall still seems weeks away.
The shops and guides we spoke with today still aren’t running trips back here due to the lower water and the warm temps, though everyone is looking foward to fall. The Bechler from mid September to mid October can offer you a technical fly fishing experience second to none.
The overwhelming concensus is that for the bulk of the day currently you have two best choices for prospecting when the hatches aren’t active - a terrestrial dropper rig (hoppers, beetles and ants are working, generally smaller sizes) as well as a smaller attractor dry - dropper rig. Standard nymph droppers will work, though most folks are using smaller bead heads (BH prince/hares ear/your favorite) and Lightning bugs
Summer hatches are dwindling - there are some Caddis (mostly after 2 PM), there might be a few midges earlier in the day. It’s just been too warm for fall hatches to get rolling, and don’t look for them this week. Sounds like the PMDs are for the most part done, though you’ll find some in pockets.
If you have been in and fished the river, we will gladly credit you for information we can post in an update, please shoot us an email!
