In a way I hate to write something that very well might increase pressure on a water that is already seeing more than its reasonable share of anglers – but the Lamar overall has been fishing really well this season. We agree with the guys at Madison River Outfitters that the Lamar (and Soda Butte) have taken over the position of the Yellowstone as the place in park you can park your rig and walk a short distance and have a shot at large fish.
Up until the weather transition over the long weekend, terrestrials were the name of the game over here – hoppers, beetles, ants and bees. Hatches have included Drakes, BWO/baetis, and even some late day caddis. It’s hard to even think about ‘em when terrestrials are in the game, but a buddy even turned some nice fish on midges the other day just to show off.
The weather week looks hatch friendly, and we’d suspect the flow bump that occurred on the 1rst with the rains stained the water but things should be looking better today and tomorrow.
Flows today (0615) are 257 cfs, with today’s average 246 cfs at the gage near Tower Ranger Station.
