There is some good news this week - overall cooler temperatures, lengthening nights, and believe it or not lower flows have helped fishing a bit in the sytem. The area is due some unseasonably warm weather in the next few days and that may rock the boat a bit….
Flows today at Island Park (0730) were 963 cfs (up from last week), the average for today 975 cfs, with the 20% flow marker 685 cfs.
The Box Canyon - the Box is still fishing reasonably well, though as expected this time of year you’ll be happier working the morning and evening (a cloudy day has been pretty rare of late - though clouds will always stretch your productive fishing window). We’ve been most productive fishing double nymph rigs with rubberlegs and beadheads, and have a buddy who has been cleaning up for several weeks now with Slump Busters, sculpins, and zonkers.
Last Chance to Harriman - A little better this past week. There are still waning hatches of PMDs, Callibaetis, Tricos, and Caddis, though terrestials (smaller hoppers) can work well in this area (run a dropper rig). Be prepared and be creative. Think smaller streamer on the cloudy days.
Riverside CG to Ashton - Think about attractor-dropper, hopper-dropper rig, or a double nymph as per the Box. PMDs are for the most part finished, some caddis in the evenings. Again be ready for almost any hatch, and think terrestrials with dropper rigs or double nymph rigs if nothing is coming off.
Ashton and Points Downstream - Cooler weather has helped a bit. If we were fishing this stretch, we’d hit it morning or evening, and have Caddis, a few baetis, and a few rusty spinners ready to go. Streamers will be a decent play early and late, especially on cooler, cloudy days (yes, there will be some of the days sooner or later).
