Pretty much everyone we’ve talked about the Firehole agrees that a week of cool days and almost frosty nights has done wonders for the river. Water temps are back down
Flows today near the confluence (0700) are 277 cfs, with today’s historical average 268 cfs. Water temps near the confluence strained to reach 68 all week, and finally did so yesterday. Even with a couple of sunny days due (today and tomorrow) Firehole water temp worries should be over for the season.
For the upcoming sunny days, terrestrials should make a play, and the evening Caddis (especially above Midway) have been a lot of fun. Cloudy, rainy, drizzling days make us think of baetis on the Firehole, and it’s time (might see a Mahogany too); right now the mid / end of the week interval looks like it just might be baetis weather.
If you’re so inclined, midges round out the menu, and there still might a damsel or two around.
The Firehole only gets better from here on in.
