The Madison in the Park is still fishing well, though water temperatures bear watching during the warm (hot to Montana locals!) weather.  There have been murmurs that the river is becoming too warm to fish (not true), though for every rumor that the fishing is off, there seems to be another that says the fishing is still hanging in there and is in fact quite good.

Terrestrials are still active; they are rather prolific this week as the warm temperatures are bringing them out.  Hooper, Ants, Beetles, and Bees all seem to be favorites of big Madison Brown trout.  Big Rainbows and Browns are coming in from Hebgen and are receptive to Soft Hackles along with the Terrestrials.  Once we get out cool, rainy weather look for the baetis to come off again.

The Madison is renowned for its difficult-to-catch fish.  These are big trout, but think of them as wise, old trout.  This is challenging fishing; if you get a second cast in to a rising fish call yourself lucky.  The fish are very spooky and the approach is anything but easy, but the possibilities are endless.

Neighbors have been having nice days fishing the river along the western border of the Park.

Flows today (0600) are 399 cfs, with today’s average 407 cfs on the gage near West Yellowstone.
