With the issues this September impacting the Madison below the lakes, we’d opine that the Northeast Corner waters have taken a bit more pressure. Maybe it’s just that the Northeast Corner waters have fished so well this year they’ve drawn much more attention that in years past.
The cooler weather this week has changed things a bit – terrestrials are still in play but not so prominently given the improved hatches. The menu has been varied as you’d expect this time of year - morning midges, transitioning to baetis, Green Drakes, Epeorus, Flavs, and even a few late Yellow Sallies (per the Park’s team in Gardiner).
Terrestrials as noted are still kicking around – ants may be leading the pack now, but bring the whole gang.
Lots of folks are talking about the crowds over here, and the Park’s guys feel pretty strongly about it right now. Things have been really crowded at the Soda Butte / Lamar confluence – we agree that staying out of this area makes great sense, and the advice to head two miles up the Lamar (from the confluence) will put you on better water, keep you out of the crowds, and avoid further injury to the somewhat stressed fishery.
Flows today (0815) are 183 cfs, with today’s average 195 cfs at the gage near Tower Ranger Station.
