The Madison in the Park is fishing better and better with each passing day. More and more fall run Rainbows and Browns are making their way into the river, making for some very happy anglers. As we transition into fall weather, the fishing opportunities should only get better.
On these warm, sunny Indian summer days we are still experiencing, don’t forget to come with a fly box stocked full of Terrestrials – the trout are still looking up for these guys – Hoppers, Ants, and Beetles in particular. There are also still sporadic Caddis hatches in the evenings – try a Soft Hackle or an EH Caddis and see what happens.
For those cloudy, cool days (which we hope there will be more of!) look for baetis coming off. The fish love to come to the surface to feast on these little guys, making for a fun time a-fishing. Streamers are really starting to drive some action as well – they are bringing in some large fish (largest I have heard of is 26”… I don’t think any of us would argue if we caught that one.) Once the fish start to crowd into the pools, nymphing should be pretty productive, but I’d definitely wait a few weeks.
Flows today (0600) are 414 cfs, with today’s average 416 cfs on the gage near West Yellowstone.
