Soda Butte is still drawing more than her fair share of visiting anglers, and is making most of them pretty damn happy.  Fall hatches are in their full swing, and with the cooler weather the region is expecting this weekend, fishing should only get better.

There are some large trout in Soda, and they have lived this long due to one key reason: they are smart. These guys have been seeing imitations all summer and can be hard to fool, but with the right fly and a good, quiet cast you should have good luck.  There are still Terrestrials around – Hoppers, Ants, and Beetles are favorites.  A Hopper followed by a small bead head dropper is never a bad idea.

Waning Drakes are still getting the trout’s attention, as are small Attractors and Parachute patterns.  The baetis are coming off (and should be even more now that we have clouds and cool weather again!)  If the dry fly action isn’t doing much for you, don’t hesitate to tie on a big ol’ Streamer.  Soda Butte trout have not seen many yet this year and like the looks of a big, tasty meal.

Flows today (0600) are 48 cfs, with today’s average 51 cfs at the Lamar Ranger Station.  Water temperatures are still hitting around 52 degrees in the afternoon.
