Contrary to what seems to be popular opinion, there are quite a few women around the world who love to fly fish. While we are a definite minority, some fly fishing businesses are seeing an open market, meeting the need, and catering to the ladies who fish. As we talked about a few weeks ago, there is a decent selection of gear available for women, including women’s waders and fishing vests. It is relatively easy for a woman to find gear that suits her needs and is also somewhat feminine and fun.
Okay, so you have you gear and are fully outfitted and ready to fish. But where do you go from here? Many women are intimidated by the thought of being taught by a man, though most men in the industry tend to be gentlemen and open to teaching women the art of fly fishing. But if that’s not your cup of tea – there is a solution. Enter the lady fly fishing teachers. In most areas, some enterprising women have created women’s-specific fly fishing guide services, clubs, and even retreats. Ladies can learn to fly fish and have a fun, relaxing day on the water.
We are seeing more and more “fly fishing resorts” pop up around the country, and many of these classy resorts offer a women’s trip where ladies can fish and connect with other women who share the same interests. Some resorts go so far as to host ladies only weekend getaways, which can be an excellent opportunity to meet other women who love to fish and like to get out and play! Often these resort getaways feature tasty meals, entertaining activities, and a wonderful opportunity to relax and recharge. Some even feature spas – who could argue with a nice massage after a long day on the water?
Another excellent opportunity to sharpen your skills and meet other women who fish is to join your local fly fishing club. Likely there will be other women there that you can form a group with. Many areas are home to women’s-only fly fishing clubs – see if there is one in your neck of the woods. These clubs are a great way to learn more about the local waters, learn new techniques, and meet new fishing buddies.
This fall and throughout the early part of winter, we’ll be taking a look at what networking opportunities are out there for fly fishing women. We’ll look in depth at women’s-only retreats, resorts, getaways, clubs, and associations. Time on the water is all the more fun if you have some friends to share it with.
The opportunities for women in the world of fly fishing are plenty, and more and more are appearing every day. Don’t be hesitant about heading out and exploring some of the options in your area – I guarantee you’ll be surprised at what you find!
