This past week a friend was in on the Bechler, most of his three day trip in was completed before the weather transition – so it was warm and sunny.  Few folks, few nuisance bugs, and lots of bear sightings.  Most bears were seen at a distance, though one close encounter on the river resulted in deployed bear spray and some anxious moments…

Terrestrials saved the day, particularly ants and beetles, though morning Tricos and evening Caddis were useful.  Baetis, Mahoganies, and Callibaetis that you typically see this time of year were few and far between, though weather should be much more conducive to decent hatches this week.  There still could in fact be a gray Drake around too.

The rivers of the Cascade Corner really do offer some of the Park’s finest fall fly fishing, but the clock is ticking.  With the much colder nights due this week at altitude terrestrials will take a hit, and the area typically shuts down if weather is seasonal by the third week of October.  There’s still time to get in there…..
