Now is the time to be on the Firehole – for a whole lot of reasons. The Park is gorgeous this time of year, and this week’s weather will probably be the last of the mild fall days for the season.
Today’s pic is of one of the weedbeds on the river that hold so much promise; two nice fish were taken just downstream of this fan shaped bed by drifting a BWO emerger soft hackle right over the edge.
The good options this week include the Firehole Canyon for runners up from Hebgen; not necessarily peak numbers yet, but they’re moving. A buddy who is good friends with some of the guys at Blue Ribbon agrees that smaller Sculpzilla streamers and Prince nymphs have been kicking on both the Firehole and Gibbon; he apparently did very well on both the Madison and Firehole yesterday according to his email late last night.
Midges have been very strong in the morning and into the early afternoon from The Broads on up, and late afternoon / evening Caddis have been pretty strong too. BWO have been great these past few cloudy days (Jess and I did very well with emergers last week even in partly sunny weather one afternoon).
You still might even turn some fish with some well placed smaller attractors, though this will probably be the last week.
Finally – expect a significant weather change late in the week and into the weekend if the forecast holds.
Flows today near the confluence (0700) are 305 cfs, with today’s historical average 280 cfs; small rain induced spikes happened on both Saturday and Sunday.
