The Gibbon is entering the fall swing, and fishing is good – damn good.  The cooler weather is here, bringing with it a whole new selection of hatches and options for the fisherman.  The fall run Browns and a few Rainbows are keeping anglers occupied and happy.  No matter what your preferred fly fishing technique, you are certain to find some fishing right now on the Gibbon that will suite your tastes.

Terrestrials are still hanging around, though the cold weather expected at the end of this week will very likely knock them out for the season.  Until then, however, be prepared with small Hoppers, Ants, Bees, and Beetles.  Even once the real bugs are gone, the fish will keep looking for them for a few weeks.

As the cold, grey weather hits expect profuse BWO hatches.  If you are lucky enough to be fishing during one of these emergences, you will see what all the fuss is about – they are not to be missed.  Prince Nymphs and Streamers are doing quite well in the deeper pools and pocket water below the Falls, and soft hackles are a safe bet, especially in the flatter pools and runs.  The Canyon section is fishing well with Attractor dry-dropper combos – the resident fish there are more than happy to take a look at what you offer.

The Gibbon has had a banner year, and for the all-too-short three and a half weeks we have to fish her waters, things are lookin’ good.

Flows today (0400) are 111 cfs, with today’s average 107 cfs, taken at the gage at Madison Junction in the Park.
