The Lamar has had a great year, and fished very well right up to the arrival of the really cold air and snow last weekend.
There’s no gage monitoring temperature on the Lamar, and it is indeed a bit more cold weather resistant than either Slough or Soda Butte – but note – the water temps on Soda have been quite cold (measured near Tower). The water temps have been dropping into the range of 33.5 to 38 F at night; temps that cold tend to make our finned friends quite lethargic.
The forecast for Cooke City shows clouds and snow with lows in the low to mid 20’s until a bit of sun on Friday; might be some baetis showing but odds are with water temps as cold as they are now – the show is for the most part over. Looks like the low hit 26 last night, though as I post this report at about 0700 it had warmed up to a balmy 31.
If you just have to fish over here, our resident Lamar wonk suggests working the confluence area as Soda Butte resident fish should have pushed down that way in preparation for winter, and that area tends to chill more slowly. Nymphing and streamers make a lot more sense when the baetis are nowhere to be seen.
There’s a lot of other great water in the Park to be fishing right now……
Flows today (0615) are 163 cfs, with today’s average 221cfs at the gage near Tower Ranger Station.
