Slough Creek has been a go to fishery all summer, and she’s really coming into her own now that the days have shortened and it’s cooled a bit.

There’s no flow gauge on Slough Creek, though the Lamar and Soda Butte flows bumped with the rain that fell earlier in the week - we’d suspect that she stained a bit but we’ve not heard reports of the river going off too far.  We’re headed up there ourselves today and will provide an update….

Your approach at this point will be more weather dependent than just a week ago - sunny day (after the cool morning period) approaches at this point will still be terrestials, with ants, beetles, and hoppers all working well.  We would certainly trail a nymph off that terrestrial, and you might end up using this rig all day on the sunny, warm days.

On the cooler, cloudy days (like today and tomorrow we hope) BWOs should be rolling, and later in the day Green and Fall Drakes will be available.  Midges might be a reasonable target on the mornings too.

Finally a smaller streamer (we like a nymph trailer) in the deeper runs and pools might draw some attention earlier and later in the day, on again on the overcast days.

Don’t forget these fish has seen a lot of flies and boots this summer -  think before you cast, and make that first cast to an unfished run count.

Despite the heat and low flow stresses of the summer, this is looking to be a good fall….get out there….
