The Gardner continues to fish well, and the scattered fall run browns already in the lower Gardner are great evidence that Fall is just around the corner. There’s not a lot of the bigger boys in the river yet, but at least the movement has started.
Flows this morning on the lower river near Mammoth at 0330 are 96 cfs with today’s average 137 cfs.
The water above Osprey Falls and below Sheepeater Cascade is still producing small brook and rainbow trout. Summer hatches have about run their course. You might see some sporadic afternoon and evening caddis -we’ll be seeing Baetis on the cooler and overcast days more consistently.
On sunnier days, your best approach will still most likely be to throw your favorite attractor dries with attractor nymphs; you could also use hopper - terrestrial /dropper rigs once the water warms up in the late mornings, particularly if its breezy. Consider a small streamer with a nymph trailer on the cooler mornings and evenings.
The Gardner is one Yellowstone’s best fall fisheries - the browns roll through this system and pressure is often minimal. Won’t be long….
