The Gibbon River report hasn’t changed a great deal since last week; your approach to the river will in part be dependent upon the weather this week.
Flows remain quite low, today’s flow reading near Madison Junction was 80 cfs, with today’s average flow 88 cfs.
Despite the somewhat cooler temps last week, water temps on the lower Gibbon were as high as 68 the past few days, and we’re still holding to the line that you shouldn’t be on the river at all below the falls.
On cooler, overcast days the meadows area could be / should be cool enough to fish safely. We’ve heard reports of a few caddis left (they should be about gone at this point), and the main hatch to be looking for would be baetis.
On the sunnier days (like we’re due for part of this week) water temps will be an issue in the meadows area; you might try a streamer or streamer / nymph set up in the deeper runs or along undercut banks early or late, and pull out the trusty terrestrials and attractors otherwise.
On warm, sunny afternoons there’s better water to be on at this point.
The Park is still planning a controlled burn in the Norris area between the 5th and 15th - we’ll have one day warning - could interrupt fishing in the area for a day or two…
