With the couple of recent bear encounters / attacks that we’ve noted in the past few days, we’ve had a hoard of emails asking for information about bear risks, encounters, and safety issues.

Fishing in Yellowstone and Montana you’re in bear country in most areas, and you’ll most likely see or encounter a bear soon or later.  We’ve personally had close bear encounters in Glacier NP on the Middle and North Forks, in Grand Teton NP on the Snake, and on several waters and trails in Yellowstone over the years.  These are events you’ll remember, and with some forethought and common sense, you’ll not be at risk.

We all do tend to forget that much of this territory we’ve mentioned is “home country” for bears, and there are seasonal events - like this years poor berry crop, the late runs of fish due to the long hot fall, etc., that greatly impact bear behavior.

Over the next few days we’ll post some information about being safe in bear country you’ve no doubt read and heard before but is useful to review.
