I just got off the phone with the Yellowstone Backcountry Office (thanks Austin) and the Bechler Ranger Station (thanks Shaun), trying to pin down some information on the two fires burning in the Bechler drainage.
The Cave Falls Fire as of yesterday had grown to over 200 acres yesterday, and with yesterday’s winds they’re thinking it ran a bit yesterday afternoon. This lightning caused fire was discovered on the 9th, and continues to move generally northeast toward the Pitchstone Plateau.
There’s another lightning caused fire, the Big Grassy Fire, burning in the area - they’re thinking this one was lightning caused too, and smoldering for several days until winds blew it up to produce smoke on Saturday. Arial recon estimated its size at about 25 acres yesterday morning.
Apparently the main Bechler trail has been reopened after being closed for a bit, and Austin in the Backcountry Office said they don’t want anyone lingering in the area. As of this morning backcountry campsites 9F1, 9F2, 9U1, 9U2 are closed.
The Bechler River itself is not directly impacted by the fires at this time, and it appears the fall hatches have not come around in force as of yet according the rangers who walk the trails every day.
