We’re happy to provide another Henry’s Fork update for our Yellowstone fishing friends. Good and bad news this week - mostly related to flows and weather.
Flows were decreased out of Island Park dam on the 13th - and there’s some junk (off color water and decaying moss) coming out of the very low reservoir. Flows have held pretty steady in the 624 cfs range, with the average for today 638 cfs.
The Box Canyon - the Box has suffered a bit with the silt and debris coming out of the lake; streamers and nymphs are the ticket here, though there’s better water to fish in this system right now.
Last Chance to Harriman - Tough sledding this past week again. Hatch wise there’s been a few Mahoganies and callibaetis about, as well as caddis in the evenings. Terrestrials (hoppers and small flying ants) will still be useful on the warmer, sunnier days. This is big boy fishing for the very patient, and those who stalk well. Mahoganies and baetis are waiting like all of us for the better fall weather.
Riverside CG to Ashton - Possibly the best water on the river right now.
Think about attractor-dropper, hopper-dropper rig, or a double nymph set ups. PMDs are for the most part finished, rare caddis in the evenings.
Again be ready for almost any hatch, and think terrestrials with dropper rigs or double nymph rigs if nothing is coming off. Try a Golden Stone or PMX on top with a beadhead dropper; attractors are producing well here also.
Ashton and Points Downstream - Cooler weather has helped a bit. If we were fishing this stretch, we’d hit it morning or evening, and have Caddis, a few baetis, and a few rusty spinners ready to go. Streamers will be a decent play early and late, especially on cooler, cloudy days. This section will play well when things really cool off.
