Despite a pretty darn mild weather pattern and some fires in the area, the river continues to fish pretty well, and there are still lots of hoppers in the Bechler Meadows.
We’ve spoken today to the ranger station (Thanks Kent) this morning as well as 3 guides working the area, one of whom was up yesterday (from Jimmy’s All Season Angler in Idaho Falls).
Your best approach to the river at this point will still be primarily weather dependent - on the warmer, sunnier days, you still have two best choices for prospecting - a terrestrial dropper rig (hoppers, beetles and ants are working, generally smaller sizes) as well as a smaller attractor dry - dropper rig. Standard nymph droppers will work, though most folks are using smaller bead heads (BH prince/hares ear/your favorite) and Lightning bugs.
With the exception of Tricos (better on the mid and lower Fall) the fall hatches really haven’t been overly active this week, though with the weather due this weekend and early next week, they could go off any time. Be ready for BWO, Mahoganies, Grey Drakes and Fall Caddis anytime.
If you have been in and fished the river, we will gladly credit you for information we can post in an update, please shoot us an email! We’re headed in ourselves next week.
