The Gardner continues to fish steadily - our weekend storm didn’t quite bring the weather we had hoped, but it helped a bit.
Flows overall remain quite low; flows this morning on the lower river near Mammoth at 0330 are 103 cfs with today’s average 132 cfs. Flows have been steady all week just over 90 cfs; the rains of the weekend have caused a bump this morning - clarity will likely be an issue for a few days.
Most days the most sensible approach will still most likely be to throw your favorite attractor dries with attractor nymphs; you could also use hopper - terrestrial /dropper rigs once the water warms up in the late mornings, particularly if its breezy. Consider a small streamer with a nymph trailer on the cooler mornings and evenings. It’s time to downsize attractors and hoppers a bit.
BWOs are a bit more evident even on the sunnier afternoons; the cooler, overcast, drizzly days (yes, we’d all like more of that kind of weather) will really push the hatch.
The water above Osprey Falls and below Sheepeater Cascade is still producing small brook and rainbow trout - it can make for a very entertaining day. Be prepared to hike if you’re headed above Sheepeater - the brookies have run to the hills to spawn and are pretty spread out.
The Gardner is one Yellowstone’s best and least pressured fall fisheries - the browns still haven’t moved into the river in great numbers but it shouldn’t be long at this point.
