We’re happy to provide another Henry’s Fork update for our Yellowstone fishing friends - though there’s better water up here in Montana of late. Good and bad news this week - mostly related to flows and weather.
Flows were lowered again out of Island Park dam on the 21st - and there’s still some junk (off color water and decaying moss) coming out of the very low reservoir. Flows have held pretty steady for several days in the mid 400s; today flows are 462 cfs, with the average for today 558 cfs.
The Box Canyon - the Box is still suffering a bit with the silt and debris coming out of the lake; streamers and nymphs are the ticket here, though there’s better water to fish in this system right now.
Last Chance to Harriman - A little better this week with the cooler weather, though you have to get down around Pinehaven for clearer water. Hatch wise it’s mainly BWOs and Mahoganies, you might see some patchy caddis about, but not many. Terrestrials (hoppers and small flying ants) might still be around, but we’re pushing the end of their season with the cooler mornings. This is still big boy fishing for the very patient and stealthy.
Riverside CG to Ashton - Possibly the best water on the river right now. We’d probably approach this with a streamer or streamer / nymph set up at this point, though double nymph rigs play well also. Attractor dries (smaller) and BWOs will also play a role.
Ashton and Points Downstream - Cooler weather has helped a bit. If we were fishing this stretch, we’d hit it morning or evening, and have Caddis, a few baetis, and a few rusty spinners ready to go. Streamers will be a decent play early and late, especially on cooler, cloudy days. This section will play well when things really cool off.
