
Continuing our series on BWO basics….
Let’s deal briefly with the entomology of the BWO. Blue winged olives are mayflies from the family Baetidae. There are a couple score plus some different mayflies in the family, and entomologists and some anglers enjoy the never ending debates over what bugs belong on what genera and species….frankly we think those debates aren’t much fun to listen and on the river aren’t of great value.
We agree with authors that suggest that any bug of the Baetis (pronounced bee-tiss by the way), Pseudocloeon, or Diphetor families qualifies as a blue winged olive from a “fisherman on the river”’s perspective.
