The Fall River and in fact the entire SW corner of the Park is in decent shape all things considered…..
Please review the Bechler River report posted yesterday - the bears really have been an issue of late.
There is only one flow gauge on the Fall that is continuously monitored, it’s on the river outside the Park border, above the Yellowstone Canal near Squirrel, ID. The river was flowing at 452 cfs this morning at 0545, with today’s average 581 cfs. Like most of the rivers in the Park a flow spike peaked on the 24th due to last weekend’s storms, but it has settled out at this point.
Summer hatches have been gone for several weeks - though there are still some midges and a few caddis later in the afternoon and evening. Tricos appear to be done at this point. A buddy was in on the upper Fall on Tuesday - a few hoppers late in the day, along with BWOs (few) and Grey Drakes late.
You still have two best choices for prospecting until the fall hatches present consistently - a terrestrial dropper rig (hoppers, beetles and ants are working, generally smaller sizes) as well as an attractor - dropper rig. Terrestrials have another week or two of life down here most likely…..downsize the hoppers in particular, and we have our best luck with a pattern that rides down in the film a bit in the fall.
Streamer or streamer-nymph set ups will in all honesty probably yield the greatest numbers over here, as in much of park, at least on days when the hatches aren’t moving.
This area can provide some of the finest fall dry fly fishing in the Park system, and is oft overlooked. If you’ve been in and have some firsthand information, please fire us an email and we’ll credit you for the data.
