Continuing our series on BWO basics….
In Montana and Yellowstone, as well as much of the West, these flies are very important in the spring (mid March through the end of May), as well as in the fall (pending weather) from around mid September through November. Cloudy, cooler, drizzly days are optimal BWO days in our neck of the woods.
That’s not to say you won’t see BWOs on sunny days - we’ve recently fished sputtering BWO hatches on the upper Madison and the Firehole on sunny mornings, and did quite well. Even a fall run brown or two will snack on a BWO if the opportunity presents itself, and was the best fish I landed even after converting over to streamers on the Madison last week….
More BWO stuff to come….
