Continuing our series on BWO strategies….
Emergers as a whole are probably critically underutilized by many fly fishermen, and BWO emergers can be a very productive tool as you face the hatch rolling along on the river.
BWO are smallish bugs, even for most mayflies, and they often struggle mightily to just break through the surface film, particularly in smoother water. Trout of course intrinsically understand this, and sometimes feast on the emergers, often to the supreme frustration of the angler casting a dun imitation.
We like a baetis or CDC cripple here, though there are lots of good options - including an appropriately sized soft hackle, which have been cooking in the Park of late.
Don’t forget the backeddies, emergers trapped here are really easy pickin’s.
Fly pics courtesy of Orvis’ online fly shop - a soft hackle HE on top, and a soft hackle BH BWO (hot one right now).
