The Lamar this past week has fished reasonably well on the right kind of day, though we’re probably nearing the end of really productive fishing on this river (mid month typically, pending weather).
Flows measured near the Tower Ranger today at 0515 are 139 cfs; and have been fairly steady here for almost a week; today’s average is 215 cfs.
On the much prefered cooler, overcast days - BWOs, Fall Green Drakes, and Hecubas will come into play, though BWOs will probably be the fly to carry the day into October. Deeper runs, pools, and undercut banks will tempt you to throw a streamer or two; add a trailing nymph to that streamer.
On the quiet days when there’s not much happening, streamers and nymphs make sense in the deeper runs and along undercuts, but there’s just not much water around. Small attractors presented well might draw some attention; terrestrials are finished due to the cold mornings of late.
Cold days make fishing in the NE corner even more of a challenge; we typically stop fishing these waters by mid October every year if the weather cools normally.
