Speaking yesterday in the Park with a guide who was back on the Bechler a couple of days ago, he note several interesting things.
He agreed with what we’d heard last week that bear activity has been unusually high lately in this corner of the park, and noted that he was aware of bear encounters on the Bechler, Fall, and Boundary Creek waters in the past week.
He also noted that dry fly hatches had not been “up to snuff” back on the Bechler in his opinion - he acknowledged they were in on less than optimal BWO days (sputtering hatches this week), and they saw no Drakes or Mahoganies. There were a few Fall Caddis, but not many. Tricos are finished, and they saw very few hoppers and flying ants around (we’d carry the terrestrials if we were going in today, but probably not use them).
His party was most successful nymphing with small mayfly type nymphs and soft hackles; they moved a few fish with small wooly buggers too, though as often as not the fish were taking the nymph dropper off the streamer.
This weekend’s weather should help some…..
