Don’t let good weather discourage you - we all think of the cool, cloudy, overcast days as BWO days, and we’re all very happy there are few of these days on tap….
We’ve had a couple of days in the Park lately on the Firehole and Madison where decent BWOs were coming off in the sun - in numbers sufficient to draw Mr. Trout’s attention but not such a prolific hatch to bury our flies among the hoardes of naturals.
For a specific example of BWOs in the sun - we had an amazing day yesterday on the Firehole swinging a small (18) PT soft hackle when there were very few BWO duns on the water - in the bright sunshine from lunch to mid afternoon. It was so windy the duns were getting blown off the water, and fish were’nt keying on them, but the soft hackle imitating the emerger was incredibly effective - it was my highest hookup rate on the Firehole in years…..
Some days they’re on, somedays they’re not….we still think a slow day on the river is better than almost anywhere else…
