The Lamar this past week has fished reasonably well on the right kind of day, at least it was prestorm - it’s been up and dirty since the 6th. Once she settles, the approach will be much the same as last week, particularly given the unseasonably warm stretch of weather we’re looking at for the next several days.
Flows measured near the Tower Ranger today at 0615 are 382 cfs; and were receding from the impressive spike with last weekend’s storm until early this morning, when they spiked again due to runoff from melting snows in yesterday’s warmth. Flows prestorm were in the 150 cfs range and ran to over 400 cfs on the 6th.
On the much prefered cooler, overcast days - BWOs, Fall Green Drakes, and Hecubas will come into play, though BWOs will probably be the fly to carry the day into October. Deeper runs, pools, and undercut banks will tempt you to throw a streamer or two; add a trailing nymph to that streamer.
On the quiet days when there’s not much happening, streamers and nymphs make sense in the deeper runs and along undercuts, but there’s just not much water around when the river’s at baseline flows. Small attractors presented well might draw some attention; terrestrials are finished due to the cold mornings of late.
Cold days make fishing in the NE corner even more of a challenge; we typically stop fishing these waters by mid October every year if the weather cools normally - who knows what this season will bring…..
