Things were a little better on the Bechler with last week’s cooler weather, though like most of the water in the Park she stained with the storms of last weekend.
As noted last week - bear activity has been unusually high lately in this corner of the park - you need to be on your toes and don’t travel alone back here.
BWOs were a little stronger last week, and a friend who was in on Friday saw some Mahoganies late in the BWO hatch - before a grizzly sow and three cubs ran them off. They also saw Fall Caddis later in the day - not in huge numbers but the fish were keying on them.
His party was most successful nymphing with small mayfly type nymphs and soft hackles; they moved a few fish with small wooly buggers too, though as often as not the fish were taking the nymph dropper off the streamer.
We’re taking terrestrials off the list this week - it’s just been too cold in the Park for them to play a very meaningful role from this point forward.
If you have been in and fished the river, we will gladly credit you for information we can post in an update, please shoot us an email!
