Thinking now about strategies for Mahoganies….

As we suggested several days ago, a guide friend works the pre-emergence nymphing hard on waters he knows host a decent (or better) mahogany hatch.

He, as well as many who fish this hatch hard, favors a Hares Ear (with or without ribbing) nymph or soft hackle, more sparsely dressed.  Given the fairly consistent sizes of the duns, you’re typically looking at size 16 nypmph give or take a size on your favorite waters.

Our Mahogany crazed buddy favors an up and across casting approach, though lots of folks fish these upstream with an indicator, and we’ve even had success on a down and across swing using a Hares Ear Soft Hackle (as pictured above).

More to come….
