The Gibbon is flowing at a new record low of 79 CFS at Madison Junction, breaking the previous record of 86 CFS. This is not a record breaking event to celebrate though. The river below Gibbon Falls is closed from 2 pm to 5 am. Even though this stretch of water is open in the mornings, don’t fish it. This is one of the most heavily fished areas of the park and the fish should be left alone until fall.
The river is still fishing the best above Norris, but the pockets above the falls are fishing well also. Terrestrial season is in full swing, making a small to medium sized hopper, beetle or ant an excellent choice. The PMDs are all but gone, but the evening caddis still provide good action.
Because of recent rains in the park, don’t be surprised to see the Gibbon muddy up a bit over the next few days. The water will help the situation, but our advice is still to leave the Gibbon alone until fall.
