The Gardner continues fish well, more fall runs have moved in this past week.
Flows overall remain quite below average; flows this morning on the lower river near Mammoth are 92 cfs today at 0730, with today’s average 127 cfs. Flows have been gradually declining all week.
BWOs have been strong again this week; the unsettled weather due this week should make things even better. Don’t forget to think about swinging small soft hackle emergers before the hatch or during a slow, stuttering hatch. A buddy was on yesterday and also saw later in the day a fair number of a smaller, darker caddis - about a 16 or so he thought - he said he did well with a super pupa type soft hackle he had tied up….
If we were fishing the river today, we’d still be nymphing, and I think that’s what the Park’s Fly Shop guys are pitching now too - they know the water better than anyone else. A double nymph set up, or streamer / nymph set up make sense too.
The lower and mid sections of the river are still probably the places to concentrate your time now, the upper river is pretty skinny as the brookies have dispersed widely to spawn.
