Soda Butte Creek has had another quiet fishing week this past week, probably due mainly to the cold evening water temps.
Flows near the Lamar Ranger Station were 86 cfs this morning at 0545, with today’s average 42 cfs. Flows have spiked dramatically over the past 12 hours with the rain and snow in the area. The Lamar is in the same shape this morning - the NE sector waters are no doubt off…
The automated temperature measuring at this station registered water temps below 35 6 of the past 7 nights - no wonder hatches have really cooled off over here.
We agree with Walter Wiese at Park’s that cold evening water temps have almost shut down the hatches - with the great things happening on the west side of the Park now, you’ll be much more productive over there.
There’s still a chance that you’ll see some baetis, when flows start to settle you could argue that SJ Worms and streamers (think a dark leech) could make sense as the flows drop and she clears.
Finally, if you still intend to head this way, there’s been a fair amount of bear activity over here late this fall - don’t fish alone and carry some bear spray in the vest or pack
