With fishing so hot in the west / northwest sector of the Park this past week - we’ve had some trouble finding many folks who have actually been in and fished the SW corner of late.
There’s no flow gauge on the Bechler, but the Fall River gauge has shown a large flow spike in the past 48 hours and we suspect the Bechler is off too given the amount of rain and snow this area received.
As noted last week - bear activity has been unusually high lately in this corner of the park - you need to be on your toes and don’t travel alone back here.
We ran into a guy at the Running Bear Pancake House two days ago who said he’d been back there, and was nymphing almost the entire time as hatches were inconsistent, and from his buddies comments he’s a nymph guy anyway. He talked about decent numbers, some on smaller streamers, with short duration BWO hatches running typically from apbout 1-3 PM. We asked about Fall Caddis and he said he saw a few….
We’d put our money on a double nymph set up (with at least one a smaller mayfly - baetis bug)….
Streamers make sense early and late, a bit smaller to match the scale of the water.
If you have been in and fished the river, we will gladly credit you for information we can post in an update, please shoot us an email!
