The Fall River was fishing pretty consistenty until the rain and snow starting late last week and lasting into the weekend, and then she blew out on Saturday. Once she clears (probably tomorrow), the fishing will look a lot like last week’s report.
Please review the Bechler River report posted yesterday - the bears are still banging around back here.
There is only one flow gauge on the Fall that is continuously monitored, it’s on the river outside the Park border, above the Yellowstone Canal near Squirrel, ID. The river was flowing at 606 cfs this morning at 0545, with today’s average 593 cfs. There was a very large spike in flows, peaking at over 1400 cfs on the 20th, and things have been settling since.
There are still hatches rolling back here - BWOs and Fall Caddis, though you won’t find them riverwide, and they won’t be as consistent. As with the Bechler (and much of the water in the Park), you’re going to be more successful nymphing with small mayfly type nymphs and swinging soft hackles.
Streamers (hang a small mayfly type nymph dropper) make sense in the deeper run and pools, particularly early and late, though finding deeper water back here can be an issue given the lower flows.
