Continuing our series on streamers…..
One of my fishing buddies just starting out argued that “a streamer is a streamer is a streamer….” - funny thing - he didn’t like to fish streamers and didn’t do very well with them. As you know - all streamers are not alike, and it’s worthwhile to think a bit about what they’re designed to imitate.
Most streamers are thought to represent some type of baitfish - streamers in this group include Zonkers, Bucktails, Clousers, Girdlebugs, and even Woolly Buggers, as well as some of the newer ties. Decievers do the same thing in saltwater.
Sculpins have historically been imitated most often by the Muddler Minnow and Matuka, though there are a host of other sculplin patterns including N2 Sculpins, Mercer’s Rag Sculpin, Morrish’s Sculpin, Near Nuff Sculpin, and Solitude Sculpzilla to name a few.
Leeches have been imitated by Marabou Leeches (an old but great pattern), bunny leaches, the Egg Sucking Leech series, and even a Woolly Bugger.
As around as you travel see what’s the optimal pattern for the time of year on the water you’re fishing - and get to know your local fisheries guy or gal to ferret out what baitfish, sculpins, leeches, etc. populate your home waters - it will improve your streamer skills immensely.
